Bipolar Mood Disorder

Bipolar disorder is an illness that affects both the mood and energy level. Everyone goes through highs and lows, but people with bipolar disorder have volatile mood changes. These changes can be upsetting for them and the people around them. While the mood swings can be extreme, people with bipolar disorder may feel and act normally in between the periods of mania and depression.

People with bipolar disorder tend to have periods when their highs are extreme, and it seems like they have too much energy. They will speak very fast, barely finishing a thought before jumping on to the next one and will be consistently distracted. These periods are called Manic episodes.

People with bipolar disorder also tend to have periods when they feel exhausted and lethargic. During these periods, they can feel hopeless, helpless or empty. They may struggle to pull themselves out of bed, neglect their hygiene and stop eating for long periods. This is called bipolar depression.

Bipolar disorder is a condition that lasts a lifetime, but with the right treatments, you can manage your symptoms and lead a healthy life.
